Darren Knight Gallery, Noel McKenna from Watson’s Bay to Waterloo, 13 September ‘til 7 October 2006
Private collection, Sydney
McKenna is an established contemporary artist, one whose practice encompasses painting, etching and ceramics. Always the individual his work is hallmarked by a dry wit, irony and whimsy.
McKenna’s work has been informed by art history and theory for there is, in his pared back style, an echo of early Sidney Nolan and John Brack. He paints a body of work in themes, the budgies in the window series, the lost dog posters, the south coast of New South Wales landscapes and the mother of them all, Big Things- McKenna’s painted a map of all the oversized, small town kitsch tourist attractions dotted about the country- think the Big Pineapple.
Collected heavily by other artists and art industry professionals, having bought one McKenna, buyers return for another and another. Collecting in depth is a common thread that runs through the purchasing habits of McKenna devotees.
McKenna is held in almost every major art museum in the country and many significant private collections both domestically and internationally.Enquire Berlin
