SHIREEN TAWEEL

born 1990, Sydney; lives and works Sydney

Shireen Taweel’s practice explores constructions of cultural heritage and the fluidity of language, using traditional coppersmith artisan techniques to create sculptures and site-specific installations. Intersecting ritual, history, religion, memory, and identity in forms that echo communication devices, vessels, scrolls and tabula-like shapes, Taweel articulates a deep connection to her experiences as a Lebanese-Australian and the possibilities of communication and translation.

Taweel has exhibited in solo shows including the recent Switching Codes, Fairfield City Museum and Gallery, Sydney, Holding Patterns, 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Sydney (2020). She has participated in several group exhibitions including Making Ground, CONSTANCE X MONA FOMA, Hobart (2021), Dora Ohlfsen and The Facade Commission, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, and Right to Access Universal Data, Biennale of Contemporary Art, MACAM, Lebanon (2019).

In 2020, Taweel’s artistic contribution was recognised by Parramatta City Council where she was awarded the Highly Commended Award, Arts and Cultural Australia Day Awards. Taweel was also recipient of Commendation Prize, The Churchie Art Prize, Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane in 2019 and a finalist in the NSW Visual Arts Emerging Fellowship Exhibition, Artspace, Sydney, 2019.
