Up next at Michael Reid Berlin are eight works on paper from Injalak Arts. Stretching from the borders of Kakadu National Park in the west, to the ‘stone country’ of the upper Liverpool and Mann Rivers in the east, this extraordinary land offers knowledge and inspiration to its artists and custodians.
At its centre is the Arnhem Plateau, a sandstone escarpment at the heart of West Arnhem Land. This escarpment, and its outliers such as Injalak Hill in Gunbalanya, hold one of the world’s greatest concentrations of rock art. It is from this ancient art, as well as ceremonial body and object designs, that the work of the Injalak artists finds its origin.
