The Call OPENING SOON, 2021

The Call presents the work of ten women artists whose work examines issues at the forefront of current cultural, social and political discourse. Across painting, installation, video, sculpture and photography, these works investigate representations of the body, the construction of identity and cultural heritage, and the possibility of translation.

Collectively, these works explore the ways we come together, communicate, and share, and call upon us to listen deeply – to place, to pain, to protest, to bodies, and to the natural world.

The exhibition also heeds a call to action: to share the work of women artists and collectively build a more inclusive future, shaped by diverse ideas, experiences and perspectives. And, in doing so, delivers it’s own call: encouraging ongoing reflection and critique to create meaningful and enduring change.

Participating artists: Nici Cumpston, Tamara Dean, Leah Emery, Nadia Hernández, Petrina Hicks, Clare Rae, Joan Ross, Mia Salsjö, Shireen Taweel and Regina Pilawuk Wilson.

The Call is curated by Alyce Neal, a Sydney-based independent curator interested in feminist discourse and socially-engaged art practices. Neal has held curatorial positions at the UNSW Art Collection, the Ian Potter Museum of Art and Monash University Museum of Art. She has worked at institutions and art spaces including SEVENTH Gallery, the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, the Biennale of Sydney and Kaldor Public Art Projects.
