Clare Rae’s photographic practice is grounded in feminist theory and seeks to subvert dominant representations of the body. Her works document the body in space, on the precipice of movement, sometimes on the edge of collapse or retraction. Set in institutional contexts such as universities and art museums, Rae’s work enacts her physical and experiential memory of these sites which is often absurd or uncomfortable. Often featuring her own body, Rae’s photographs are an alternative construction of female representation, one which is adaptive and awkward, and resists categorisation.
Rae is currently undertaking a PhD at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne. She holds a Master of Arts, Monash University (2014) and Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) (2009), RMIT University, Melbourne. She is a founding member of Melbourne based LAST Collective and has exhibited extensively across Australia, as well as Singapore, Germany, and Switzerland. Her solo shows include Entre Nous: Claude Cahun and Clare Rae, CCA Galleries Jersey United Kingdom and Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (2018), 20+9+5, Sutton Project Space Melbourne (2015). She has participated in group exhibitions including In Her Words, Horsham Regional Art Gallery, Victoria (2019), Unfinished Business, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2017) and An Unorthodox Flow of Images Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (2017).
In 2019, Rae was a finalist in the Olive Cotton Award, Tweed Regional Gallery 2019 and the Bowness Prize, Monash Gallery of Art in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Her work is held in public and private collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, Artbank, Monash University and RMIT, Melbourne.
