Melbourne-born artist Michael Doolan has been exhibiting regularly for over two decades. His work is concerned with the legacy of the fairy tale, and seeks new ways of reading and decoding these narratives which have evolved in parallel to their broader cultural contexts. Doolan’s ceramic sculptures have the iconic images of Disney as their starting point. Familiar images such as dwarves, deer, owls, apples and goblets are arranged into uncanny vignettes with sleek, monochromatic surfaces. The resulting scenes are simultaneously cute and ominous.
Significant solo exhibitions include World Within World at Castlemaine Art Museum (2017), and Between Wishes and Fears: A Studio Investigation of the Fairy Tale at MADA Gallery Monash University, Victoria (2013). His work is regularly included in group exhibitions including Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Award, Deakin University, Burwood, Victoria (2016) and Narratives of New: Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart, Tasmania (2014).
Michael Doolan has been the recipient of the Victorian Public Sculpture Fund (2014), City of Manningham Contemporary Ceramics Award (2009), Sidney Myer International Ceramics Award (1998), and the Gold Medal in the 14th International Biennale, Ceramique d’Art in Vallauris, France. He has undertaken the Australia Council’s Connections Residency (2009) and London Studio Residency (2002), and his work is held in numerous public and corporate collections nationally and internationally, including Chateau Museum, Vallauris, France; Artbank, Sydney; McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park, Victoria; Newcastle Art Gallery, New South Wales; Queensland University of Technology; Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery; the Besen Family Foundation; and Price Waterhouse Coopers.
Doolan is a lecturer at the Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. In 2013 he was awarded a PhD from Monash University, Victoria.
