“In preparing this series for exhibition in Berlin, I had the opportunity to seek out some items that might spark recognition and maybe even some nostalgic memories in my audience on the other side of the world. I found some beautiful German ceramics that I was happy to add to my collection of still life ‘models’. It also gave me the opportunity to bring together German with Australian, in the form of flowers and foliage.
I realised, when creating the still life vignettes, that many of the items in my existing collection were English, and how those things were valued in my family when I was growing up. Seeking out German collectables and placing them in the vignettes felt a little bit like rounding out my own heritage (my paternal Grandfather was German).
Placing the new items alongside actual heirlooms from my family felt strange, like I was inventing a kind of connection where there hasn’t been one before – assembling memories of my German relatives that I don’t have.” — Andrea Huelin 2022
