Jilamara Arts Centre on the Tiwi Islands and our art gallery, Michael Reid Berlin, couldn’t be further apart and despite restrictions being faced in every corner of the globe, the artworks of Tiwi artist TIMOTHY COOK made it to Berlin and are now on view in a solo exhibition.
Michael Reid Berlin is the trusted European home for Indigenous Australian Art, with an exhibition program that includes solo and curated group exhibitions by significant Indigenous artists.
Tamara Howie is a Territorian (from the NT) currently living in Berlin, a journalist & arts writer who made the leap from Australia to Germany shortly before COVID hit in early 2020. In this interview with ABC Radio Darwin, Tamara sat down with Berlin Gallery Manager, Lily Fenwicke (4mins 57s), to discuss how the exhibition came to be and how art by Indigenous Australian artists is being received & understood in a European context.
Thank you to Tamara, the team at ABC Radio Darwin, and to Timothy Cook and the staff at Jilamara Arts & Crafts Association on Melville Island.
