Returning for his second solo exhibition at Michael Reid Berlin, and fresh off completing his PhD at the University of New South Wales (Art & Design)… GERWYN DAVIES.
Hailing from Queensland, Gerwyn is now based in Sydney, where last year he was invited to design the 2020 Tree at the Queen Victoria Building, an iconic reimagining of their famed Christmas Tree, “a symbol of joy and resilience for a time like no other”. A 5-time Finalist in the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award and twice a Finalist for The William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize, Gerwyn was also the recipient of the inaugural Australia Council residency at the Kyoto Arts Centre in Japan in 2018. We are thrilled to be welcoming back Gerwyn with works from his latest series, ‘Utopia’.
“The trope of Utopia is filled with the promise of unyielding pleasure and perfection. As a fictional construct Utopia is always out of reach and attempts to pin down a fantasy, an attempt commonly marked by failure.
In this way, I am interested in real world Utopias as places that exist on a precipice, navigating the edges of illusion and reality, decadence and decay, that juggle revealing and concealing themselves in complex ways in order to maintain the artifice of perfection” – Gerwyn Davies
