Alec Baker
Kalaya Tjina (Emu Tracks)

27 Aug - 25 Sep 2021

We are honoured to present the debut solo exhibition from respected elder and cultural leader ALEC BAKER from APY Lands (Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara) in South Australia.

Alec Baker was born at Shirley Well, and raised in a traditional Anangu existence with his family on their ancestral country. When cattle stations were established in the area, Alec commenced what would become a long career as a stockman, where he was served well by his exceptional bush-skills and extensive knowledge of country.

As well as a highly regarded stockman, Alec is recognised as a cultural authority and a leader in his community. Alec was integral to the establishment of Indulkana Community, helping with the set-up of crucial infrastructure and the construction of many of the community’s buildings – including what is now the Iwantja Arts art centre.

As a founding artist and long-standing director of Iwantja Arts, Alec Baker continues to maintain a prolific art practice alongside his role as community Elder and leader today.
