oil on linen
153 x 122.5 cm
Philip Hunter described his work as a translation of landscape. With an interest in the shifts occurring in the ongoing depiction of the Australian bush, Hunter’s oil on linen paintings were a response to particular geographic areas as well as how they have been rendered by other artists in the past. Hunter’s paintings meld abstract, organic motifs with a more conventional perspective of the earth. The resulting works convey a dual sense of beauty and isolation.
Hunter grew up in the Wimmera area in Victoria and had ongoing relationship with the region which influenced his practice.
Hunter exhibited regularly since 1980 around Australia and abroad and has held major solo exhibitions at various public galleries and museums. His work has been exhibited internationally in New York, Tokyo, Beijing and various cities in the U.K. and Europe. His works are represented in public, corporate and private collections in Australia, USA, Europe and Asia.
