contextualisation of artwork:
Official for just one year—from July 4, 1858 (following Minnesota’s admission on May 11, 1858) to July 3, 1859 (before Oregon’s statehood on February 14, 1859)—the 32-star flag is among the shortest-lived U.S. national flags. Production almost certainly ceased by early 1859, meaning the flag was in use for only about nine months. Pre-Civil War flags were made almost exclusively for public or institutional use, contributing to their rarity today. Although officially obsolete before April 1861, some 32-star examples likely saw service with Union regiments in the early stages of the Civil War.
