About Michael Reid Berlin

Michael Reid Berlin can be found in the central neighbourhood of Mitte and is a permanent hub for Australian art in Europe.

With an exhibition program that displays the best of Australian contemporary art, the gallery produces up to eight exhibitions a year, and participates in art fairs and projects across Germany, England, Scotland, Sweden and wider Europe. The gallery is an entry point for European collectors and the first port of call for Australian collectors visiting Berlin.

Michael Reid is one of the leading art dealers in Australia, advising private clients on the formation of their art collections with the aid of decades of experience in the sector. Michael’s cultural commentary, sought across television, print and social media affirm his role as an ambassador for Australian art. Michael received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on Australia Day 2016 for his services to the arts. Michael has a Bachelor of Arts degree and Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts from the University of Melbourne; a Bachelor of Law degree from Sydney University & a Masters in Arts Administration, Art Business from the University of New South Wales.

After a decade of arts industry experience with Christie’s in London and Australia, culminating with the opening of a major representative office for Christie’s in Brisbane in 1996, Michael went on to contribute weekly as Art Market Analyst to the business section of The Australian newspaper for a decade. During this time Michael taught on Art Business at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales. Following his time at News Corporation, Michael wrote a regular column for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age newspapers’ ‘Good Weekend’ magazine for five years.

Michael’s books Guide to Australian Art Galleries (2005) and How to Buy & Sell Art (2008 & 2010) have been published by Allen & Unwin. He co-authored Australian Art: Who, when, what and how much? (2011) with Emily Cloney & Nathan Taylor, and The Poetics of Excess (2012) with Emily Cloney.

Michael’s reputation as a respected cultural commentator goes beyond his work in the print media, and in 2008 and 2009 Michael co-hosted the Sky Business News Channel Art Industry Hour and anchored an arts spot of Drive Time ABC Radio.

Recognising that interest in Australian art is not bound by geographic constraints, Michael has established galleries in Sydney, Berlin and regional New South Wales, as well as an established online and social media presence. The Sydney & Berlin galleries exhibit extensively at art fairs within Australia and Europe.

For one brief shining moment, Michael was Recess Milk Monitor at Narrandera Primary School. Michael is a co- founding director of Art Month Sydney; founder of Ackerstrasse “Open Street”, Berlin; a former director & deputy chair of the Foundation for Sydney Living Museums he is a member of the Law Society of New South Wales; the Australian Antique Dealers Association; The International Confederation of Art & Antique Dealers Association. Michael was a co-judge of the 2016 Head On Photo Festival and sat on the judging panel, of the Australian Financial Review’s, True Leaders 2017 award. In 2018 Michael was asked to sit on Christie’s Education Art World Professional Advisory Panel.

Toby Meagher

Toby is a specialist in contemporary Australian art.

After Directing the Berlin gallery for two years, Toby returned to the Sydney gallery in 2017. His time abroad developed a strong European network for the gallery, allowing for sales and opportunities for gallery Artists across the continent, developing ongoing projects in London, Paris and Cologne. Toby has a strong grasp of the complexities of international freight, both for sales and touring exhibitions. With a particular interest in client service, Toby brings a straightforward approach to acquisition advice and collection management. Toby has been with the gallery since 2013.

Toby holds a degree in Art History & Theory from the University of Sydney as well as a Masters of Art Administration from UNSW Art & Design (formerly COFA). While completing his Masters program Toby interned in the Photography Department at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra as well as working at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. He also built on his experience in roles with Kaldor Public Art Projects and as a researcher for the Australian Research Council’s Major Project: Australia Art Exhibitions 1968-2009.

Beyond his work with Michael Reid, Toby continues to pursue a passion for arts writing and has a particular interest in photography and urban Indigenous art practice. Toby also runs a small wine label with friends out of Mudgee, NSW and is a keen fly fisherman.
