See Dupain’s retrospective at the State Library of New South Wales: Max Dupain: Definitive Dupain, 200th Anniversary of the SLNSW, until 18th July 2027.
For the first time in over three decades, Max Dupain’s iconic Australian beach photographs — among them Sunbaker (1937) and Bondi (1939) — are reunited in a single exhibition, and available for acquisition. Not since a remarkable cluster of shows in 1991–92 — Helen Ennis’ landmark National Gallery of Australia survey Max Dupain: Photographs; the Mitchell Library and Blaxland Gallery exhibitions in Sydney; and the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ posthumous Max Dupain: An Appreciation — have collectors had the opportunity to view and acquire works by one of Australia’s most important mid-twentieth-century photographers.
Currently on view at the State Library of New South Wales is a major museum retrospective of Dupain’s work, honouring the library’s 200th anniversary. He is that important.
