With five galleries across Sydney, regional NSW and Berlin, bricks and mortar are hardly an issue for Michael Reid Galleries. Thinking outside the box in the pursuit of new programming opportunities and ever-expanding audience engagement, a new program will be launched in 2024.
Under the banner Michael Reid Beyond, the program will operate as a moveable offsite project space, hosting temporary exhibitions in artists’ studios, empty buildings, outdoor locations and regional museums. This nimble approach means Beyond can cater to more ambitious proposals. “Removing some of the limitations imposed by timelines and gallery conventions, Beyond’s approach is to offer a greater freedom and scope, fostering innovation and also offering wider audiences a dynamic alternative to the gallery model,” says Dean Andersen, Beyond program manager.
The new venture will not be restricted to cities in which Michael Reid already operates, allowing for programming to engage new audiences for the gallery. An evolution of the Michael Reid Art Bar concept, these offsite exhibitions bring a key social and event aspect to the exhibitions, filling the audience demand for shows outside of the traditional gallery model.
