Destiny – Exhibition Publication, 2022

In early 2022 the Directors of Michael Reid Sydney + Berlin began what would be this years most important collaboration, working with revered Yolŋu artist and leader MR. WANAMBI, alongside the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre in Yirrkala, Northern Territory.

‘Destiny’, a major body of work assembled over 3 years, would navigate the diversity of Mr. Wanambi’s material processes while illuminating his expression of Yolŋu culture through the distinctive motif of schooling sea mullet fish.

During the production of this exhibition, the Yolŋu and wider Australian art community were saddened by the sudden passing of Mr. Wanambi, immediately shifting the curatorial discourse of this exhibition.

The artist’s family, as well as our colleagues in Yirrkala, advised that this exhibition should proceed and it was with great pride that the Directors and colleagues of Michael Reid presented this astounding exhibition of what was Mr. Wanambi’s final body of work.
