As well as an innovative and distinct fashion photography practice, Derek Henderson exhibits his fine art photography internationally. Henderson’s work incorporates portraiture as well as the urban and natural landscape. His versatile approach renders his human subjects open and vulnerable, while his depictions of landscape contain an air of distance and nostalgia.
Henderson is able to bring his considered eye to subject matter as diverse as hydrangeas, sharks, Maori teenagers and abattoir workers. What on first glance might appear to be a simply composed image compels the viewer to keep looking as new associations or emotions are brought to the surface.
Henderson’s works have been exhibited throughout Australia and New Zealand. His work has been the subject of two major monographs, The terrible boredom of paradise (2005) and Mercy Mercer (2009). Henderson’s work is held in major public collections including The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetu.
