Precious Abundance

Michael Reid is delighted to join forces with Gosford Regional Gallery to co-present Precious Abundance by New South Wales Central Coast-based painter and sculptor Mandy Francis.

Marking a high point in Francis’s widely celebrated career, Precious Abundance sees a magnificent flock of feathered creatures and other exuberant natural forms take flight across the Gosford exhibition space, tempering these dazzling, colour-filled profusions with a tinge of melancholic recognition that our environment’s abundance is increasingly under threat. To mark this major achievement, Michael Reid is pleased to offer collectors the opportunity to acquire works from the Gosford exhibition.

Working from her home studio, Francis conjures her compositions from distilled field notes and photographs, translating these into expressive oil paintings and sculptural works. “Getting ready for Precious Abundance, I’ve been painting, sewing, sculpting and sculpting away – downright mucking about in the studio – hoping to create something full of love, meaning and joy for you at Gosford Regional Gallery,” says the artist.

Deploying strong shadows, unusual perspectives and abstract patterns inspired by nature, Francis experiments freely with paint, pastels, wire, papier-mâché and found objects. Rather than working to a fixed plan, the artist allows each piece to evolve through the creative process, moving between fast, energetic bursts and slower, more considered application.

The resulting series feels as alive and unfettered as the birdlife and other winged creatures immortalised throughout. Paintings on view across both locations can be acquired through Michael Reid, with select works now available online.
