Sydney Contemporary 2026 | First Nations

A trio of sprawling and spectacular works by three of the most accomplished and acclaimed Australian First Nations artists working today forms a powerful welcome to our 10th anniversary Sydney Contemporary presentation.

A monumental suspended installation of tessellating etched-metal works on reclaimed road signs by celebrated Yolŋu artist and 2026 Wynne Prize winner Gaypalani Waṉambi anchors our exhibition, offering a glittering centre of gravity around which the entire presentation turns. Joining her is senior Yankunytjatjara artist and Iwantja Arts director Betty Chimney, whose work is currently on view at the National Gallery of Australia in the landmark exhibition Ngura Puḻka – Epic Country.

Senior Ngan’gikurrungurr artist Regina Pilawuk Wilson returns to the fair with a magnificent suite of large-scale, colour-soaked paintings, arriving after a succession of major acquisitions and institutional showings at home and abroad that have further affirmed her stature as one of the country’s most important living artists. Yolŋu artist Djirrirra Wunuŋmurra Yukuwa rounds out our survey of new work by Australian First Nations artists, bringing the distinctive visual language for which she is widely renowned to a new suite of works on metal.
